Vacuum bellows are indispensable flexible sealing components widely used in high vacuum and ultra-high vacuum pipelines, equipment connections and process chambers. Unlike rigid vacuum pipe fittings, vacuum bellows are engineered to maintain a hermetic seal while allowing controlled axial compression, lateral offset and angular deflection, which solves many common pain points in vacuum system assembly and operation.
Most standard vacuum bellows are manufactured from 304 or 316L stainless steel. For more demanding ultra-high vacuum environments, special materials such as Inconel alloys are available to deliver better high-temperature resistance and lower outgassing performance. Two mainstream types are formed corrugated bellows and edge-welded bellows. Formed vacuum bellows are cost-effective for general high vacuum systems, while edge-welded vacuum bellows support longer strokes and cleaner internal surfaces, making them the preferred choice for semiconductor and synchrotron UHV equipment.
Vacuum bellows are usually supplied pre-welded with KF, CF or ISO flanges to match standard vacuum hardware. KF vacuum bellows are easy to assemble with clamps and elastomer centering rings, suitable for quick disassembly in laboratory and low-to-medium vacuum lines. CF vacuum bellows use copper metal gaskets and bolted connections, capable of reaching ultra-low helium leak rates down to 1×10⁻¹⁰ Pa·m³/s after helium leak detection, which is required for UHV baking processes. Large-size ISO vacuum bellows are commonly adopted for industrial coating machines and large vacuum chambers.
The core performance indicators you need to evaluate when sourcing vacuum bellows include helium leak rate, outgassing rate, allowable movement range, cycle life and working temperature range. Improper selection will cause slow leakage, virtual leaks or premature fatigue cracks. Engineers should avoid over-compressing or over-stretching vacuum bellows beyond the rated stroke during installation. Long vacuum bellows assemblies also need mechanical support to prevent sagging and extra stress on the thin corrugated walls. All mating flange surfaces must be fully cleaned to eliminate particles that damage sealing performance.
Vacuum bellows serve a broad range of industries. In semiconductor wafer fabrication, they connect vacuum pumps, transfer chambers and process modules to isolate pump vibration. In vacuum coating, they accommodate thermal deformation during heating cycles. Scientific laboratories, surface analysis instruments and particle accelerators also rely on high-quality vacuum bellows to preserve stable vacuum pressure.
Custom vacuum bellows are available for special requirements, including custom lengths, non-standard flange sizes, electropolished inner surfaces and RF shielding structures. Whether you need standard KF25 vacuum bellows, CF UHV bellows or custom welded assemblies, proper specification matching and strict leak testing are essential to guarantee reliable long-term operation.
